Dr. Igor Canisso was born and raised in Birigui, a small town of the Sao Paulo State in Brazil. He grew up working with livestock and horses in the family business. Pursuing his passion and natural vocation to work with animals, he earned a veterinary degree with honors from the Federal University of Parana in Brazil. Thereafter, he worked as a large animal practitioner dealing particularly with equids and ruminants.

After a few years in private practice, Dr. Canisso returned to academia to obtain a master’s degree in animal andrology and reproductive biotechnology at the Federal University of Vicosa, Brazil. Dr. Canisso continues to be consulted about clinical cases and to review scientific manuscripts and give presentations about the topic of his master’s studies, donkey reproduction.

Upon completion of his master’s program, Dr. Canisso was a visiting scholar in equine reproduction and stud farm management at Aberystwyth University in the United Kingdom. He next moved to Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine to complete a residency in theriogenology.

At the University of Kentucky Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center, he obtained his PhD degree in equine reproduction. During his time in Lexington he oversaw clinical care of a herd of approximately 600 horses. He has obtained board certification from both the American College of Theriogenologists and the European College of Animal Reproduction. He joined the faculty at Illinois in 2014.

Dr. Canisso frequently presents the results of his scientific discoveries and shares his clinical experiences in national and international veterinary meetings. He has strong interest in mare reproductive health and stallion fertility and physiology.
